A while ago I went up to visit Venetia Stanley-Smith Kajiyama at her home in the Kyoto countryside. Her sight is not so good now, but she still gets great pleasure from singing—her voice is still strong and she knows all the words. Her regular NHK TV programme 猫のしっぽカエルの手 [English title: At Home with Venetia in Kyoto] wanted to film her singing one of her favourite songs, Scarborough Fair. It is a popular song in Japan and a kind of signature tune for her since she is well known for her beautiful herb garden which she has written about in her books. I also had to make lunch using her Scarborough Fair Pilaf recipe. It was a beautiful day and she enjoyed singing and the sunshine (I'm not such a good cook 😅) .

March 28th Meeting Cancelled

Cancelled :( I am very sorry but due to corona virus social distancing we will not hold Kyoto Ukulele Club / Kansai Shanty Crew on Saturday March 28th and until further notice. We look forward to seeing everybody after the risk is reduced. I am very sorry it is short notice. Please stay safe.

May 25th 10th Anniversary of Singing Around the Table

The next meeting of Kyoto Ukulele Club/Singing Around the Table/Kansai Shanty Crew will be on Saturday May 25th.

Singing Around the Table was first held on May 31st 2009 at Gnome so this next meeting will be the 10th Anniversary of our founding.

Let's...

...sing some of the old favourites from our 10 year repertoire

...welcome back some old members and very special guests.

...see photos of ten years of the club on screen throughout the evening.

...wear fancy dress or hats etc. in celebration (optional of course).

Location: Irish Pub Gnome, just south of Kawaramachi-Nijo (on the west side).

Kyoto Ukulele Club - Jan 19th 2019

Thank you to all our Christmas singers!!! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to all!!

Next is Saturday January 19th. Usual time (7-10pm) Usual place (Gnome, Kyoto)
Alongside our usual repertoire, we will have a theme: Scotland.
This is to celebrate Burn's Night - the traditional celebration of the Scottish poet Robert Burns.
We will sing some Scottish songs and read the famous poem "Address to a Haggis". If you like, please wear something Scottish, for example: tartan 「タータンチェック」Harris Tweed 「ハリスツイード」thistle 「アザミ」heather 「ヒースの花」etc.
